What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid molecule categorized as a sterol, characterized by its waxy, fat-like appearance. It is an integral component of cell membranes and serves as a structural foundation for these membranes.

Moreover, cholesterol plays a pivotal role in various physiological processes, including the synthesis of steroid hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone, and adrenal corticosteroids, as well as bile acids and vitamin D.

Cholesterol is synthesized within the body, primarily in the liver, but it is also obtained through dietary sources.

However, excessive levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream can contribute to atherosclerosis and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
