How does age influence the likelihood of developing GERD?

Age can influence the likelihood of developing GERD, with an increased prevalence in older adults. Factors such as weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone and reduced esophageal motility can contribute.

Additionally, aging may be associated with higher rates of conditions like hiatal hernia, a risk factor for GERD.

Hormonal changes and medications used to manage age-related health issues can also impact GERD risk. A study by El-Serag et al. highlights age as a significant factor in the epidemiology of GERD, with a higher prevalence in individuals over 60 years old.
